Creating improvisational music and musicals is one of the most entertaining and fulfilling things to do in the world of improv. This four-hour workshop will focus on the tools necessary for improvising songs and musicals and give all participants an opportunity to practice the skills they are learning.

The workshop will focus on:
- Singing out with emotion, physicality, and confidence
- Song structures
- Making songs more interesting and effective
- Singing duets and with larger groups
- Incorporating music into improv scenes
- Performing musical scenes and multi-scene musicals

Mark Lewis is an area pianist, music director, composer, and teacher. Has provided music for many PlayMakers Repertory Co. productions and has worked with Transactors since 1992. Mark helped develop Transactors' The Musical, a full-length improvised musical comedy and led the music improv workshop at ComedyWorx last year. One of the joys of improvisation is collaborating with other players. Each collection forms its own identity or "group mind." This collective thinking is often nonlinear, so it takes us in directions that a single person couldn't imagine alone. Participants will learn how to improvise in a group setting. Every exercise in the course will involve most or all of the students improvising together spontaneously. We'll explore how to recognize and create group patterns, when to lead and when to follow, committing to group energy, and trusting your fellow players. Invest in the group and it will take you to new places in improv. This course is taught by company member Dan Sipp (dancehip@gmail.com or [919] 943-6373).
